Banisteriopsis caapi is known for its intense psychedelic effects. This plant, native to the Amazon region, has been used for centuries by indigenous shamans for its hallucinogenic effects.

Description and Species Banisteriopsis caapi, also called caapi or yajé, is a liana-like plant with over 40 different species. At Indian Spirit we offer two varieties:

  • Ourinhos: The name means "little gold". This variant is loved by many indigenous church communities, such as those of the Santo Daime religion.
  • Thunder: Trueno means “thunder” and describes the powerful effect of this variety on the body.

Traditional Combination with DMT In shamanic tradition, caapi is often combined with plants containing DMT (dimethyltryptamine), the substance responsible for its strong psychoactive effects. Oral ingestion of DMT alone is generally not psychoactive, as enzymes break it down quickly. However, Banisteriopsis caapi contains MAO inhibitors, which temporarily block these enzymes and enhance the effects of DMT. Caapi is also sometimes combined with magic mushrooms for a more intense experience.

Dosage and Effects The dosage varies based on personal sensitivity and the desired effect. Usually the amount is between 25 and 150 grams. The effects of caapi depend on the dosage, body weight and mood of the user. The first effects are usually noticeable after 60 to 90 minutes, and the trip lasts on average 2 to 6 hours.
